FRANCISCO CRIMINAL ATTORNEY
Tips
For Your Criminal Court Appearance
1. Judges are people too
Criminal
defense judges in San Francisco can be influenced
by the first impression you make upon them. That
is why your appearance in a criminal court room
should be appropriate. When possible, dress in
a business casual style and be sure your clothing
is clean, modest and neat. Avoid wearing sleeveless
shirts, sandals or shorts to a San Francisco criminal
courtroom under any circumstances. Be aware the
judge in a criminal courtroom may ask you to change
into something more appropriate. Clothing for
work, such as uniforms, are considered acceptable
and will show the judge you are gainfully employed.
By your attire, it will show the San Francisco
judge you plan to take the criminal court proceedings
seriously.
2. Be Prompt for your court date
To ensure that you get an impartial attitude from
your San Francisco criminal judge, arriving on
time is probably the most important thing you
can do! Your punctuality will help him to form
a positive opinion about your willingness to comply
with probation. Your San Francisco criminal defense
attorney will be able to focus his energies into
your criminal case rather than making apologies
for your tardiness and/or absence. If you know
you are going to be late for your court appearance,
call the court and let them know when you expect
to be there. If you fail to appear or are late
a criminal judge may issue a bench warrant for
your arrest, which will cause you to default on
your bail and cost you a higher percentage for
your next bail.
3. Address the San Francisco criminal
judge with respect
Many criminal defense clients are confused about
how to address a female judge. The best way to
handle this situation is to respond, “Yes, your
honor” or “No, your honor”. “Ma’am” or “Sir” are
also equally acceptable. Be sure to speak clearly
and loud enough for the judge and the court reporter
to hear. Also, if you do not understand something
do not be afraid to let the judge know so he can
explain it in more detail.
4. Follow along with what is happening
Obtain a notebook, binder, computer or something
to keep track of notes from your San Francisco
criminal court case. Make notes of any questions
that you may have for your San Francisco criminal
attorney or for the judge. Record the date of
your next court date and keep phone numbers of
your lawyer, the courthouse just in the event
something happens.
